Asuna’s 10 Best Looks in Sword Art Online, Ranked
Asuna is an incredibly popular character, and arguably the best character in Sword Art Online (sorry, Kirito). But she morphs and changes not only as her character develops, but as she jumps in and out of different worlds. Which of her outfits from across the series is best? Below, let’s rank each of Asuna’s various costumes from Sword Art Online from good to great.
#10 Asuna’s outfit in Fairy Dance doesn’t reflect her character
Despite this being the most evocative outfit she wears, it’s also the weakest entry on this list. Asuna is a complex character, and despite the fact that her outfits are not always 100% chosen by her per se, they almost always evoke an aspect of her character. This outfit, however, doesn’t really depict Asuna at all. Rather, it depicts what a tyrannical stalker wants to see in her. As such, it takes last spot on this list.
#9 Asuna in augmented reality is a bit generic
Although Asuna’s weapon is pretty intriguing here, looking like a classic rapier, which makes sense given that’s Asuna’s favored weapon, the rest of her outfit is hard to pin down. Itlooks like a somewhat generic, futuristic outfit without much to add. Her real knockout getup from this movie is just her casual wear (which we’ll get to in a moment).
#8 Unital Ring Asuna wears basic battle gear
Asuna’s outfit in Unital Ring is less ideal than her usual outfits for almost the same reason as the Fairy Dance outfit but on the opposite end of the spectrum. This outfit simply depicts Asuna’s combative side. The basic battle gear look doesn’t do much to highlight Asuna’s elegance, or dynamism as one of the strongest female leads in all of anime.
However, as Kirito reflects in the books her presences alone is her greatest strength, and even this hodgepodge of bare bones gear somehow manages to highlight her fortitude and strength that helps make her so captivating as a character.
One thing that is a plus about this outfit? Asuna gets her light brown hair back which is a huge win over the blue in ALO.
#7 Asuna in her domestic era
One of the reasons that Asuna is a fan favorite is not just because she’s powerful and beautiful – it’s because of how dynamic she is. Yes – you can love to fight, look great, and love to cook. Asuna’s penchant for cooking comes up throughout the Sword Art Online story, and this is the outfit we first learn about her softer, more homely side when she has Kirito over for a nice meal to thank him for looking out for her while she napped.
#6 Asuna with a lightsaber
Asuna does not play a big role in Gun Gale Online, but we do get a glimpse of what her outfit looks like in that world. Presumably she joins Kirito to play here and there in GGO. This outfit is pretty slick, however, even if it lacks some of the finer detail of her better outfits. Maybe we are in need of an Asuna GGO spin off so we can see it more?
#5 Asuna’s casual wear in ordinal scale highlights her free spiritedness
To be with a guy like Kirito you have to be a bit of a free spirit. The dude is just so intense he needs someone a little more easy going around to keep things light. Of course, Asuna can be just as intense when the situation calls for it, but she has a very agreeable, feminine side to her as well, and her casual outfit from Ordinal Scale shows this off. It may not be as iconic as some of her other outfits, but it’s a solid look for her that lands a top spot on this list.
#4 Asuna’s elfen look has become the gold standard
Although arguably better known for her original Aincrad garb, Asuna’s look from ALO has become something of a standard for her. She and the other heroes often fall back on ALO throughout the series in order to meet in their log cabin which was brought over from Aincrad. Even in Unital Ring we still see Asuna sporting the elf ears and blue hair. This makes the ALO avatar the one with the most continuity.
While it’s not my favorite look of hers, it’s hard to deny that it’s a solid one. The fact so many epic arcs and fights have included this look also goes a long ways in helping it leave a positive, lasting impression.
#3 Asuna’s Progressive look grants her added depth
I really like Asuna’s look from the second Progressive film. The colors very much suit her in this outfit, and I particularly like the lighter pink undergarment covered by the deeper red cape. The cape looks fantastic as Asuna twirls and spins her way out of difficult situations in combat. This outfit seems to combine multiple elements about Asuna’s character into one. On the one hand, you have the pageantry of a knight thanks to the cape and the rapier and the armor, but the rest of the outfit feels like it gives way to athleticism that leans into her lightning fast speed. Additionally the lighter pink ties in with her very nurturing, feminine side and the flow of the cape feels almost visually similar to her casual outfit from Ordinal Scale.
Of all of Asuna’s outfits, this one feels like it suits her the most – like she’s the one who made the outfit, not just something forced on her she had to make her own.
#2 Asuna’s Knights of the Blood Oath uniform is her most iconic
Asuna’s Aincrad look from when she was a high up member of the Knights of the Blood Oath will likely forever be her most iconic costume. It comes from the era when Sword Art Online was at it’s peak hype. And despite the fact that even better SAO arcs would follow, most remember SAO and Asuna best from this part of the story.
No matter how well this outfit suits her, you have to keep in mind the fact that it’s just a uniform. While Asuna undoubtedly did somethings to make this uniform her own, ultimately it’s not a style she picked for herself, but one you have to wear in order to be in the most elite guild in the game.
#1 Asuna’s Goddess look was when she was at her strongest
No matter how many other great outfits exist for Asuna, she is at her most beautiful and most deadly when bearing the wardrobe of Stacis, the Goddess of Creation. With her goddess powers intact, Asuna becomes one of the strongest Sword Art Online characters in the entire series, capable of literally moving mountains at will.
That combined with the regal elegance of this look, with subtle illusions to previous outfits, puts her stint as a the goddess of creation in the underworld as her #1 most memorable outfit.
