Mega Dragonite ex Deck List and Guide

Ready to rule the skies with your Ascended Heroes Mega Dragonite ex deck?

While we’ve had Dragonite in the Pokemon TCG before, it’s been a while since we’ve had one that was even just somewhat competitively viable. Could that be all about to change with Ascended Heroes releasing on January 30, 2026 ?

Although largely being recognized as a collector’s set thanks to its high number of valuable chase cards, Ascended Heroes does boast a few new and interesting cards in it, including the Mega Dragonite ex capable of swinging for 330. Below, we’ll be looking at an example deck list that’s already done well on the local scene in Japan where Ascended Heroe’s sister set – Mega Dream – is already released.

Mega Dragonite ex card breakdown

Mega Dragonite ex

Mega Dragonite ex is one of the latest Mega Evolutions introduced into the Pokemon world. And as far as Mega Pokemon ex cards go, this one’s got a lot going for it.

For starters, it’s got one of the highest HP stats in the game, just shy of Mega Venusaur ex’s insane HP of 380. Still, having 370 HP makes Mega Dragonite ex very hard to knock out in a single blow – something which could stand out as a prime advantage in the current meta.

Ryuno Glide

Meanwhile, Dragonite also has a strong attack, dealing 330 base damage. That’s enough to take out almost anything you’ll face other than the tougher Mega Pokemon ex out there.

Sky Transport

Finally, Sky Transport isn’t only the perfect fit for Mega Dragonite from the Pokemon lore – where Dragonite frequently is used to transport people and things – it’s a powerful mechanic that lets you easily switch Pokemon in and out of the active spot. This works particularly well into the Mega Kangaskhan ex that’s become highly popular lately among competitive players.

Mega Kangaskhan ex’s powerful “Run Errand’s” only drawback is that Kangaskhan must be in he Active Spot to use it. That’s not at all an issue with Dragonite’s “Sky Transport,” however, as you can easily switch it out and then mount your attack.

Similarly, you can use this with the Tatsugiri, letting you search for the supporter you need before pivoting to a different Active Pokemon.

Find Mega Dragonite ex with ease via Dragonaire

Despite having pleasantly awe-inspiring artwork, this Dragonair has a strong ability – one of the stronger abilities on any stage 1 Pokemon in an evolution like this: “Evolution Guidance”. This ability enables incredible consistency for Mega Dragonite ex, enabling you to search it out from your deck and adding to your hand.

Power up Ryuno Glide with Eelektrik

Mega Dragonite ex’s primary drawback is its reliance on two different types of energy to use its strongest attack. However, that’s what Dynamotor on the Eelektrik is for. Use Dynamotor to power up your Mega Dragonite ex and ready it for the attack. Meanwhile, Dynamotor can also be handy into this deck’s other secondary attacker which we will talk about next.

Mega Dragonite ex secondary attackers

While Mega Dragonite is the secret to success for this precise build, you do have two strong secondary attackers to back up your strategy.

Mega Eelektross ex

Mega Eelektross ex

The first is a new Mega Pokemon ex we should be getting in Ascended Heroes: Mega Elektross ex. Elektross evolves from your Eelektrik, making it an easy add to this deck. Meanwhile, it has two solid attacks that you can use situationally to your advantage. First is the damage spreading Split Bomb which you can use to take out low HP or weakened Pokemon on the bench. Second is Disaster Shock which you can use to paralyze your opponent’s Pokemon – a handy strategy that few actively prepare for.

Bundle this together into a Pokemon with 350 HP and you have a very solid secondary attacker for Mega Dragonite ex.

Wellspring Mask Ogerpon ex

The other attacker feels much more like a tech than a shoe-in for this deck. The idea here is that because you are running water energy anyways for your Mega Dragonite ex’s attack, why not combo it with Wellspring Mask so you can use its formidable Torrential Pump? Indeed, Torrential Pump has been one of the stronger dual attacks in the game since it debuted, letting you swing for 100 damage to the opposing Active Pokemon and 120 to the bench. This can be effective in a myriad of situations and a powerful way to enable multiple prize turns.

However, some players might find this particular tech to be too cumbersome to pull off. Indeed, you already have to put in the work to get your energy onto Mega Dragapult ex – it can be a tall order to get the energy you need for a play like this.

That being said, Dynamotor does excel at energy acceleration and it could be all you need to enable a toolbox style row of attackers like this one behind your main big guy, Dragonite.

Mega Dragonite ex trainer choices

The trainer choices for this Mega Dragonite ex build are fairly straightforward. You’ll be using a regular slew of draw supporters like Lillie’s Determination to keep your hand full, and Iono to disrupt your opponent’s hand.

Boss’s Order’s feels necessary in a deck like this with so many spread attacks, letting you make the most out of your secondary attackers, especially the Wellspring Mask that could potentially take a three-or-four-prize turn if you set things up right. And Arven is a staple in Stage 2 decks like this one primarily for its ability to find TM Evolution and consistency items like your Buddy-Buddy Poffin and various balls, speeding up the evolution process and letting you field your strongest Pokemon faster.

Beyond the more core aspects of your strategy, there are a few cards that feel more optional in this build. The first is the Secret Box card which definitely feels like it could be a Prime Catcher instead to help you take advantage of your spread damage. Also the Powerglass – while very handy for a deck like this – might not fit into everyone’s final build.

The core mechanics of this deck, however, feel very solid, and could see Mega Dragonite ex being quite popular on Pokemon TCG Live, online tournaments, and even local play, if not necessarily having the nuts and bolts needed to be a truly top tier Pokemon TCG deck.
